This page provides a range of parenting online advice, videos and helplines for parents and carers.

Tips for new parents

Being a parent This NHS website provides a range of information which covers how to get pregnant, I'm pregnant, labour and birth, your newborn and babies and toddlers. There is also information about supporting your baby to move and play.

Essential Parent

This 'Essential Parent' website, supported by Professor Robert Winston and many other well-known organisations gives information and video clips which support soon to be parents, new parents and experienced parent. It covers all areas from conception, pregnancy, supporting baby, potty training, speech and language, toddlers, children and teenagers.

Teenagers

  • Parenting teenagers can be a very challenging time and this site by Relate covers many of the common issues including relationships, mental health, alcohol, drugs, school and work, behaviour, family issues and communicating with your teenager.
  • This NHS page explains how to support our teenagers' mental health and wellbeing and covers many issues including stress, bullying, managing moods and bereavement.

General parenting support

  • Family Links is a National Charity and training organisation who are dedicated to the promotion of emotional health at home, school and work and have provided a range of free downloads for parents.
  • These Parenting Puzzle DVD  links on YouTube cover a wide range of typical family issues including behaviour to ignore, problem solving and negotiation, feelings and what to do with them, praise and empathy.  Well worth a watch and you may want to share them with your children.  These Parenting Puzzle clips are also available in Urdu.
  • Triple P -  Positive Parenting Programme provides lots of information about Triple P strategies in a special free magazine,  It also gives a link to the Triple P Online course which is not free but covers all the Triple P strategies to support Positive Parenting.
  • Triple P  Quick Tip Videos  have been designed to give bite-size video information on a range of subjects in order to support parents during COVID-19 (Coronavirus)
  • GOV.UK has produced a range of information to help with Keeping Children safe online and looks at some of the risks that children are exposed to when being online.

Family Lives

Family Lives is a charity with a free helpline open seven days a week. Its website has advice, live chat, befriending services and parenting/relationship support groups.

Care for the Family

Care for the Family This website gives a wide range of information on Parent Support including Single Parents, Parents with children with Additional Needs, Step Families and Adoption and Fostering,  Marriage, Bereavement and COVID-19 support. They are also offering free online Marriage sessions.

Health and wellbeing for the whole family including help to support children and young people who are showing anxiety, with particular reference to Covid-19, who have special needs or a diagnosed disability.

As a parent, looking after your own health and well-being is essential in order to support your children's health and well-being.  This self-help book is aimed at giving you a better understanding of low self-esteem and explains how to develop good self-esteem.

Individuals or parents and carers of children can go through the dimensions of health and wellbeing outlined in the tool and rate themselves or their child against each. An individualised report will be produced, highlighting areas of most need and providing self-care information on those subjects. The aim of self-care information is to take the hard work out of searching the internet or library, by collating trustworthy information and local resources into one place.
