Applying for a Primary School Place
In Coventry children start Infant and Primary School the September following their fourth birthday. The law says all children must start school at the beginning of the term following their fifth birthday. If a child attends an infant school, they will transfer to a junior/primary school in the September following their seventh birthday.
Some parents may feel that their child is young for their age, or there may be other reasons for wanting to delay entry to school. In these cases you may be able to "defer" your child's entry. You should still apply for a school place in the normal way. However, you should also discuss this matter with the head teacher of your preferred school before you submit your application form. if you decide to defer your child's entry we will reserve you a place until your child's agreed start date. We will not allocate this place to another child.
You cannot assume that your application for a deferred entry place will be successful. It will still be considered in the same way as all other applications in accordance with the admission policy.
When should I apply for a school place?
The first year of school is called Reception Year. You will need to apply for your child's school place in the September prior to your child starting school.
The Coventry Family Information Service have produced a Directory of Schools and Academies which includes information about other childcare services on each school site available to download on this page
