Formerly known as RNIB Rushton School and Children's Home, RNIB Pears Centre for Specialist Learning builds on over fifty years of expert care and education.
We offer individually-tailored care in a rich learning environment. Our living and learning facilities are purpose-built to meet the needs of children and young people with complex needs who are blind and partially sighted. The staff on our site include specialist support from QTVIs, Speech and Language Therapy, Physiotherapy, Habilitation Officer, Behaviour Nurse Specialist and Occupational Therapy.
Children are allocated key workers and we offer a 24 hour service. Our waking night staff can afford you a good rest in the knowledge that your son or daughter is being looked after. This type of support allows you to choose how much or how little time away you can take.
We offer trips out and about using public transport, shopping, cinema, sports and leisure. We offer specially adapted vehicles and qualified drivers who can meet individual needs, including wheelchair users. We also make full use of our on-site facilities, such as our multi-sensory rooms.
Activities are carefully planned in consultation with children, parents, carers, social workers and health professionals to ensure that the preferences and needs of the child and their family are met as far as reasonably possible. Family members can also get involved in activities.
Before a child or young person joins us for any length of time, we offer the whole family the opportunity to visit us and meet our team.
This provides us with a background picture of each young person and helps us to plan an appropriate level and type of support for each individual.
We are also happy to discuss block bookings.
