Multi Systemic Therapy ( MST)

Multisystemic Therapy (MST) is a short term, intensive way of working with families where there is a young person living at home aged 11-17 years, whose behaviour (at home, school and/or in the community) is of concern, this would include:

-aggressive behaviour

-disrespect and disobedience

-not going to school or other problems at school

-running away or not coming home

-using drugs or alcohol

-getting into trouble with the law

MST is based on evidence. This means it has been proven to work and after 30 years of research has repeatedly produced positive results. This is because MST focuses on addressing all the environmental systems that impact on the issues of concern. MST recognises that each system plays a critical role in a young person’s world and each system requires attention when effective change is needed to improve the quality of life for youth and their families.

•MST clinicians go to where the young person is, and are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week

•They work intensively with parents and caregivers to put them in control

•The therapist works with the caregivers to keep the adolescent focused on school and gaining job skills

•The therapist and caregivers may introduce the young person to sports and recreational activities as an alternative to hanging out
